Enduring Power of Attorney

Choose who will manage your finances if you can't.

An Enduring Power of Attorney lets you appoint one or more people you trust to manage your financial and legal affairs. Unlike an ordinary power of attorney, it keeps working if you lose the capacity to make decisions, for example through illness, accident or dementia.

You decide

  • Who your attorney or attorneys will be

  • Whether it starts straight away or only if you lose capacity

  • Any limits or conditions on their powers

  • Whether multiple attorneys must act together or can act separately

An Enduring Power of Attorney covers money and legal matters only. Health, accommodation and lifestyle decisions are covered by an Advance Care Directive.

You can only make one while you have capacity. Without one, your family may need to apply to SACAT for an Administration Order, which takes time and money.
