SACAT Orders

When someone can no longer make their own decisions.

If a person loses capacity without having appointed an attorney or Substitute Decision-Maker, the South Australian Civil and Administrative Tribunal (SACAT) can appoint someone to make decisions for them.

  • A Guardianship Order appoints a guardian for health, accommodation and lifestyle decisions

  • An Administration Order appoints an administrator to manage money and legal affairs

SACAT can appoint a family member or friend. If no suitable person is available, it can appoint the Public Advocate or the Public Trustee. SACAT also reviews existing orders and deals with disputes about Advance Care Directives.
