Demerit Points & Expiation Notices

Before you pay that fine, check your options.

Sandstone court building in Adelaide, South Australia

Many expiation notices, including those for speeding, mobile phone use and seatbelt offences, carry demerit points. Once you reach the limit, you'll lose your licence.

Paying an expiation notice means accepting the demerit points. Before you pay, you may be able to:

  • Ask the issuing authority to review the notice

  • Elect to be prosecuted, so the matter is decided by a court

  • Negotiate with police about the charge

If you're close to the limit, or have already received a disqualification notice, talk to us about your options.
